6 BEAUTY TRICKS USING COCONUT OIL
It's no secret that coconut oil can be used for EVERYTHING from cooking to household cleaning, to my favorite...beauty.
Do you know all the way this “jack-of-all-trades” oil can enhance your beauty regimen?
Here are my daily go-to uses:
Makeup Remover
1. Soak a cotton pad with coconut oil and very gently rub all over eyes and face.
2. Wipe away excess oil with a warm, damp washcloth.
On nights when I don’t wash my hair I almost always apply a homemade coconut oil hair mask. Depending on what I have in my fridge I will either:
-Blend a couple of spoonfuls of coconut oil with mashed avocado and apply that to dry hair and let sit overnight. Cover hair with a shower cap to keep mask from getting on your sheets.
or
-Heat coconut oil in a bowl and add a bit of honey. Blend together and rub this into ends of hair, as well as, massaging into scalp. Let this mixture sit overnight and wash your hair in the morning.
After just one use your hair will be super shiny and feel incredibly soft and moisturized. I promise!
Hair Masks
Tip- this works for all hair types however, for those with finer hair I recommend leaving the mask on for only 30 minutes. An overnight treatment may weigh down the hair and make it greasy.
Breath Freshener
& Teeth Whitener
Have you heard of “oil pulling?" It's when you gargle with coconut oil to get rid of bacteria from the mouth, resulting in fresher breath, whiter teeth and an overall healthier smile. It sounds pretty gross, I know, but it actually works.
Take a teaspoon of coconut oil and swish it around your mouth for 1-3 minutes. Follow up with brushing your teeth. You can even add coconut oil to your toothpaste if you don’t like the idea of gargling with it.
Recently I took off my acrylic nails (yes I know they are TERRIBLE for your nail beds) and found that my natural nails are not only hideous right now but super dry and damaged. I tried a coconut oil nail soak to moisturize my cuticles and hopefully repair my damaged nails.
1. Heat up a couple tablespoons of coconut oil, add honey and a splash of lavender oil.
2. Soak your hands for 15-20 minutes.
3. Follow up by applying a nice layer of coconut oil onto your hands and covering with cotton gloves for an overnight treatment that you leave your hands feeling like new.
Nail Soak
Combine coconut oil, honey, and brown sugar and rub onto your lips once to twice daily prior to applying your favorite lip balm for super soft lips.
Lip Scrub
I moisturize my entire body with coconut oil, and use it in lieu of shaving cream or gel.
Moisturizer
I recommend keeping a separate jar in your bathroom, that is strictly for your beauty treatments.
It can get a bit overwhelming and confusing when buying coconut oil for the first time...
refined, pure, organic?!
I always buy 100% organic, virgin coconut oil. The brand I swear by is
Vita Coco. It's cold pressed and unrefined. I bought mine at Target ($7.99), but you can find it at most super markets.
