THE TRUTH ABOUT NATURAL DEODORANTS
I have been on the search for the perfect (or close to) natural deodorant for quite some time now. Growing up I never thought about the icky ingredients that make up the fresh smelling bars I was using. Like most other people, I purchased my deodorant based off of smell and popularity- Dove ads sold me everytime. When I became pregnant two years ago I started to really think about everything I put into and onto my body, and I mean everything. Not only did I try to eat my cleanest but I changed my whole beauty routine. That included the deodorants I was using. Aluminum, parabens, triclosan, and propylene glycol make up a third of the nasty ingredients found in popular deodorants. I don’t know about you, but it scares the crap out of me to think I was putting aluminum on my skin and having it seep into my pores and absorbed into my body. Thanks to new and improved organic brands I feel better about combatting sweat and odor.
Now for the truth about natural deodorants…
Do they work?? Honestly, for me it depends on the brand. I have tried my fair share of organic deodorants and it comes down to formula and scent for me. There are several that promised to ward off sweat and keep you smelling fresh, but did just the opposite. Below are my current favorites. I included one for the special guy in your life because if you're anything like me, you want to try to make him an organic believer too!
Tom's of Maine Original Care unscented: This is probably the most mainstream and recognizable brand for organic deodorants. However, it's my least favorite of the ones I've tried. I never felt quite fresh enough after using this product. I don't mind that the stick is unscented, and it does deliver on keeping odors at bay, but the product left my feeling sticky, which I don't like. The aluminum-free formula is what's most important to remember when searching for your perfect stick.
CVS Pharmacy, Ramsey $3.99
Desert Essence Tea Tree Oil Stick Deodorant with Lavender: This is my go-to everyday deodorant. It neutralizes body odor without irritating my skin. I love that the product uses tea tree oil (which is a natural antiseptic) to control underarm sweat and neem oil and lavender and chamomile to control odor.
Fairway Market, Paramus $3.99
Weleda Sage Deodorant: One of my newer and more expensive deodorant purchases, but so happy I went for it! Ive actually never used this one on its own…I spray this over my Desert Essence stick for a more intensified scent. This has sage, rosemary and lavender essential oils so I like the idea of intensifying the lavender in my other deodorant stick. Call me crazy but I swear by it and love the effect.
Whole Foods, Paramus $14
Every Man Jack Cedarwood Deodorant: Love!!! If you are as obsessed with men’s cologne as much as I am, you will live for this scent! My husband has been using this product for quite some time now and hasn’t complained yet. Even with long, drawn out days at work he still returns home smelling delicious. Plus, it helps that it glides on so smoothly.
Target, Paramus $4.99
