This green potion beats the belly bloat and helps shed those extra LB's. Is it too good to be true? Read on to find out what happened when our Wellness Writer
Angela Amaro drank celery juice for three weeks straight.
SO WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THIS CRAZE?
If you’re a user, on almost any social media outlet, or browsed your local bookstore, you’ve probably come across the challenge that millions of people around the globe are partaking in the Celery Juice Movement.
If you haven’t heard of the ever so popular movement just yet, let me fill you in. The movement was created by Anthony William, better known as the Medical Medium. William's is the best selling author of four books, and someone who I consider to be a holistic educator. According to William's blog, "Celery is truly the savior when it comes to chronic illness. I've seen thousands of people who suffer from chronic and mystery illness restore their health by drinking 16 ounces of celery juice daily on an empty stomach."
While, I'm not one to jump on bandwagons, but I am someone who is constantly curious of finding ways to improve my health and wellbeing naturally. So naturally, I also did my research prior to juicing.
BENEFITS:
Celery is packed with many vitamins including A, B-6, C and K. It is an excellent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and a powerful healing food.
Celery is known to...
1. Aid in digestion, weight loss, overall gut health, and acid reflux
2. Improve blood pressure
3. Reduce high cholesterol
4. Prevent liver disease
5. Fight infections
6. Reduce urinary tract infections
7. Improve mental clarity
8. Improve skin issues
9. Help reduce the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes
10. Be a cancer-protective vegetable
ARE THE CLAIMS TRUE?
It was time to test out this magic potion for myself to see if there was validity to what I was reading.
I am not a doctor, nutritionist, registered dietician or holistic health coach, but I am majoring in Health Sciences, and actively research these "trending" movements. I believe that the best education, is experience. For me, taking part in the Celery Juice Movement was definitely worth a try.
MY EXPERIENCE:
The juice was a little tough for me to get down at first. But like solidifying any new routine or habit, I stuck with it and gave it the good old college try for three weeks.
By the beginning of the second week, I actually looked forward to my daily dose of celery juice. Currently, I am being treated for stomach issues and poor digestion. In this department, I saw a huge difference by the end of this week. I usually have a tough time having regular bowel movements, but the juice certainly helped moved everything along much faster. (TMI I know! But it's true)!
By the end of the third week, I am happy to report that I did see even more improvements! With unexplainable stomach bloating being one of my top grievances, the bloating went down a considerable amount. Overall, I lost 12 pounds since week one, and have more energy. This could have other contributing factors (diet and exercise), however, I believe the juice has helped with my weight loss.
I am sure you’re wondering if there were any negatives. The answer is yes. While the juice is a great stimulator, by the end of the third week, I had to back off because it did cause some stomach pain and more than frequent bowel movements. I will most certainly go back to the juice when I feel up for a good cleanse.
Ingredients:
1 package of organic celery
(pull the leaves off to avoid a bitter tasting juice)
What you’ll need:
A masticating juicer such as the Omega: the juicer does all the work for you. Or you can use a high powered blender like the Ninja.
If you’re using a high powered blender:
-
Chop the celery into small pieces
-
Blend on puree
-
Strain the pulp into a nut milk bag or a fine colander
-
Push down the pulp to retrieve the max amount of juice
-
Drink!
